to draw on light

Imogen Cunningham _______________________________________ Edward Weston

Class 5 Photography: shooting assignment one

To draw on light
Photography means ‘to draw on light’… we don’t think about it often but that is all your camera can see. It doesn’t see the ocean, rather the light that is reflected off of the ocean.

Shooting assignment focus: simplicity, form, light and balanced exposure

Think of the way Imogen Cunningham and Edward Weston transformed simple objects into beautiful photographs. They did this will good lighting, good exposure and good printing

Prove in this photo shoot that you can capture a still, in focus image. To make sure you have a good exposure, bracket!

How to Bracket:
- determine your exposure time with your light meter, take the photo
- take the same photo again one stop higher and one stop lower with the same shutter speed
Photo 1: f-8 at 1/60 Photo 2: f5.6 at 1/60 Photo 3: f-11 at 1/60

What I’m looking for:
· film is well exposed, in focus, still (not blurry) 20 points
· photographs use light to emphasize form 20 points
· simplicity was considered in compositions 20 points
· thought and effort was put in to make these 20 points
images well composed and creatively expressive
· prints have well balanced exposure, are dust free and 20 points
have been dodged and burned if necessary
